The trend for “cocktail receptions” is gaining popularity. A cocktail reception with “finger foods” is designed for a short, stand up party, usually with alcohol served. It’s not meant to a be a heavy meal, but guests generally leave to dine elsewhere.
Often, this type of party has at least one type of display, a sandwich or slider and an assortment of hot and cold appetizers. You’ll also probably want to choose an assortment of different types of fruits, cheeses, vegetables or nuts.
It is a common misconception that hors d’oeuvres should be less expensive than a full meal. Appetizers are made from expensive ingredients and are more labor intensive for a chef. In general, more items are served at a cocktail party than a dinner. We recommend adding a station such as pasta or carving with a bread display. This adds depth to the menu. Today’s menus have unlimited station choices such as sliders, mac and cheese, stir fry, potato bars, even doughnuts and bananas foster!
Make sure there is plenty of food when alcohol is being served. You may want to begin the night by passing specialty appetizers, adding stations and buffets later on and ending with a coffee bar and desserts. Ask your caterer to help you with combinations that will “wow” your guests as well as fill hearty appetites!
