If you’re anything like me, I usually make way too much food for a party. Something was ingrained at a young age that running out of food would quickly become an apocalyptic scenario. Naturally, I overcompensate and make enough food to feed a small army.
After a great cook out I look in to my fridge and begin to panic at the meat, vegetables, slaw and dips to feed yet another army. After the moments of confusion and sweat begin to subside I regain rational thinking and begin to pull out a few of my favorites. Steak and slaw. With these two simple leftovers you can build and incredible sandwich. The day before you will need to retain a the juices/drippings from the steak right after it was cooked.
Take your steak from the fridge and place in a small ovenproof pan. Add 3-4 tablespoons of the juice (note: you may have to nuke the juice in the microwave to get it back to a liquid state) on top of the steak. I like to use a small pan that won’t let the juices run far from the meat. Cover with aluminum foil and place in a 225 degree oven for 10-15 minutes, all you want to do is warm the steak and not let it continue to cook. Remove the steak from the oven, keep covered, and place on a rack to cool.
Let’s build this sandwich! Get your favorite kind of bread, add an unmentionable amount of butter to it and grill it off. Uncover your steak and remove from the pan, slice very thin on a biases (as pictured below) then toss in the pan you used to cook it in with some more of the pan drippings. Grab a few of your leftover grilled veggies and slaw and pile up on your browned bread. Finally, pile on your steak, slice in half and enjoy.
That’s just one of my favorite leftover recipes. Always choose a menu that you can recycle your leftovers for a few days, makes it easy on your wallet and meal planning!
